Research Activities:
Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of polymyxins against multidrug-resistant ‘superbugs’, in particular Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii (NHMRC funded projects, NIH grant application)
Chemotherapy for infections in patients with cystic fibrosis
Novel anti-pathogenic agents
Integration of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to assist in antimicrobial development, to reduce resistance development and to optimize efficacy in the clinical use of antimicrobial agents
Discovery of novel antimicrobial agents against bacterial ‘superbugs’
Combination of antimicrobial agents
Lead optimisation of new antimicrobial entities
Techniques/Expertise:
Susceptibility testing including: minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations; fractional inhibition concentrations (for combinations); population analysis profiles
Time-kill experiments and post-antibiotic effect experiments (in vitro and in vivo )
in vitro Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) infection model
in vitro biofilm model
Animal infection models (mouse thigh and mouse lung)
Quantitative analysis of drugs in biological fluids (using HPLC and bioassays)
Pharmacokinetics of antimicrobials in small animals, including hepatic and renal handling of drugs and metabolites
Discovery and purification of novel antimicrobial agents from natural products
